6-DAY NEW ENGLAND FAMILY ITINERARY
A New England Road Trip to Boston
New York • Coastal New England • Boston
New England felt like stepping into a history book. We flew into New York, rented a car, and made our way north, stopping whenever something looked interesting.
The drive became part of the adventure. Boston then gave us four wonderful days in one of America's oldest and most walkable cities before the scenic return to New York.

Pick up the rental car and begin the drive north. Do not rush it. Charming towns, coastal viewpoints, seafood restaurants, and roadside stops are the point of this day.

Good to know before you go.

Choose the stop that fits your route and family. We would plan one dependable anchor, then leave room for a town, viewpoint, or seafood lunch that looks worth it.
-
It can save on airfare and turns the transfer into a New England road trip. Reprice direct Boston flights before deciding because the best answer changes.
Day 2
Freedom Trail
Boston Common through Old North Church, with the city's Revolutionary history connected by one walkable route.
Day 2
DAY 2

Spend the day walking Boston's Freedom Trail. Use it as a route through the city, not a race to collect every marker.
Finish at Quincy Market, where everyone can choose a different dinner without turning the meal into a family negotiation.

FREEDOM TRAIL FAQ
Good to know before you go.
-
Plan most of a day if you want to enter several sites, stop for food, and keep children engaged instead of rushing to every marker.
-
The marked trail can organize the day on its own, but a good guide adds stories and context. Decide which interiors matter before you start.
Day 3
Boston Harbor
The Tea Party Ships and Museum, Harborwalk, aquarium area, waterfront parks, seafood, and a day that felt different from the Freedom Trail.
Day 3
DAY 3
Boston Harbor
Give the waterfront its own day. The Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum is especially good for families because it lets visitors take part in the story.
Add the Harborwalk, aquarium, and waterfront park at a pace that still leaves time for fresh seafood overlooking the water.

CAMBRIDGE FAQ
Good to know before you go.
-
A half-day can cover Harvard and the square. Add a museum or a longer river walk if the family wants a slower day.
-
We would leave it parked. Public transit and walking are easier than downtown and Cambridge parking for this itinerary.
