DAY 1 · OLD CITY
Yu Garden gave us the historic side first.
We started in the gardens and the busy Old City streets around them. Inside, the water, rockwork, pavilions, and smaller views slowed us down. Outside, the shops and snacks brought the noise and color back immediately.
That contrast was a useful first look at Shanghai. The city did not feel like an extension of Japan; it announced itself as something different.

We would carry the garden name and destination in Chinese, add more traffic margin, and avoid pairing too many distant sights with a short stop.
Our take: Yu Garden and the surrounding streets were the right introduction to a city we only had time to sample.
DAY 1 · QUIETER SHANGHAI
The Jade Buddha Temple changed the pace of the day.
After the energy around Yu Garden, the temple gave us a quieter stop and a different view of the city. It was not a long visit, but it kept Shanghai from becoming only skylines and shopping.
We appreciated the contrast more because the itinerary stayed light. A short stop can still matter when it changes what the city feels like.

What we would change
We would confirm current visitor hours and carry a little more context before arriving so the details inside the temple had more meaning.
Our take: This was a worthwhile counterpoint to Shanghai's famous modern view.
DAY 1 · SUNSET AND NIGHT
The Bund put old and new Shanghai in one frame.
Historic buildings lined one side of the river and the Pudong skyline rose on the other. We walked it before dark, then returned after the lights came on because the view was worth seeing twice.
Staying at the Hyatt on the Bund made the skyline part of the hotel experience instead of another cross-city appointment.

What we would change
We would protect more time for the walk and check the lighting schedule rather than assuming the skyline stays illuminated at the same hours year-round.
Our take: The Bund was the visual highlight of the stop and the clearest reason we want to return.
FINAL HALF-DAY
Pudong was the easy airport-day choice.
We crossed the river for Super Brand Mall, food, anime and character shops, Pokémon shopping, and one last look at the skyline.
A mall was not a compromise here. It gave the family an air-conditioned, weather-proof final half-day without risking the flight on a complicated route.

What we would change
We would confirm exactly how much airport transfer time the day requires. Shanghai traffic is not where we would spend our safety margin.
Our take: Pudong was a practical finish, and the skyline made even the final shopping hours feel specific to Shanghai.
WHAT WORKED
We would keep these parts.
A view-led home base: Hyatt on the Bund made the skyline part of the stay.
Didi for longer rides: It reduced friction when transit or traffic made the simple route less simple.
A light first visit: One full day and a half-day kept the stop enjoyable.
Two Bund views: Daylight showed the contrast; nighttime delivered the skyline.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
A better version of the same trip.
Add traffic margin: We would allow more time than the map suggests for every longer transfer.
Prearrange the airport ride: The final half-day is better without last-minute transportation decisions.
Return for the neighborhoods: Another trip should move beyond the first-visit highlights.
