France surprised us. We expected to love Paris, and we did, but we did not expect to completely fall in love with Normandy.
The slower pace, charming villages, and stories of D-Day made this one of our most memorable trips. This route combines one of the world's greatest cities with history that deserves time and context.

Paris
Start in Paris, but do not try to finish it. Choose one or two neighborhoods each day and let the walks, cafes, and architecture between the major sights count.
A hop-on hop-off bus worked especially well for our first jet-lagged day. It let us see the city without making everyone navigate the Metro or walk for hours immediately after the flight.

Eat: Boulangerie Gana, Creperie Genia, and Pizzeria Popolare.

Back to Paris
Finish where the trip began and use the final days for anything you missed.
Or simply wander. Some of our best Paris memories came from cafes, quiet streets, churches, and neighborhoods that were never part of the original plan.

Eat: Choose restaurants by the final neighborhood instead of crossing Paris for dinner.

At least three or four full days. Paris is too large to finish, so choose neighborhoods and priorities instead of trying to cross the city for every famous landmark.

Reserve the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Sainte-Chapelle, Versailles, and any special tour you would regret missing. Leave bakeries, churches, walks, and many meals flexible.

It is central, walkable, full of food and small streets, and easy to enjoy without a rigid plan. It has been our favorite part of the city to stay in.

Rouen & Bayeux
Pick up the rental car and head toward Normandy. Stop in Rouen for half-timbered streets, the cathedral that inspired Monet, and the history of Joan of Arc.
Continue to Bayeux, your home base for the next two nights. Spend the evening walking the quiet streets and enjoying dinner instead of adding another attraction.

A few hours gave us time for the center, cathedral, Joan of Arc history, and lunch. Stay longer if museums or a slower old-town day are priorities.

Pick it up as you leave Paris, then use Rouen to break up the drive. Save the parking location before entering the center.

Bayeux between the day trips
We arrived after Rouen and used Bayeux as our base for the D-Day sites and Mont Saint-Michel. The center is walkable, the streets are calm in the evening, and coming back to the same room made the driving days much easier.
Leave time for the cathedral, bakeries, and a quiet dinner. Bayeux was not only where we slept; it was the part of Normandy that made the route feel settled.
Stay: Le Petit Matin
Eat: Choose a small restaurant in the historic center and reserve ahead when the dining room has limited tables.
Reserve: The Bayeux room, rental car, and private D-Day guide.

Bayeux is central for the D-Day sites and pleasant after a long history day. The walkable center, food, and evening streets made it more than a practical hotel stop.

Two nights worked for this route. Add another if you want more time in Bayeux itself or a less compressed Mont Saint-Michel day.

Normandy D-Day Tour
This became one of the most meaningful days of our trip. We strongly recommend hiring a private guide for the Normandy beaches.
The history is too important and too complex to reduce to a series of signs. A good guide connects the locations, personal stories, and decisions that shaped what happened here.

For us, yes. The sites are spread out and the history is too important to reduce to isolated monuments. We have booked private tours twice and would do it again.

It can be done, but we would not choose that pace. Staying in Bayeux gave the day more time and a much calmer start and finish.

Talk about D-Day before the tour, bring layers and rain protection, and do not stack a heavy evening plan after the cemetery.

Mont Saint-Michel
Leave Bayeux and drive to Mont Saint-Michel. Few places in Europe feel this improbable until you are standing beneath the island.
Give the abbey, medieval streets, stone stairways, shops, and viewpoints several hours. Arrive early or stay later to avoid the largest crowds, then begin the drive back toward Paris.
